Relay For Life Donegal has received an Honourable Mention in the ‘Team Award’ category at the Global Spirit of Relay Awards for one of the teams which participated in the 2014 Relay. ‘Team Spirit’ took part in the successful Relay For Life event which was held in Donegal last May and received an honourable mention at the recent awards for exemplifying the ‘True Spirit of Relay’. The Irish Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a 24 hour celebration event which gives communities a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, to remember those lost to cancer and to empower the public to fight back against the disease.

There are 19 Relay For Life events planned in communities across Ireland this year and outside of Ireland, 27 countries also hold various Relay for Life events following its inception in the 1980s by the American Cancer Society. The 27 countries who host Relays entered their various Relays into the Spirit of Relay Awards. These Awards recognise outstanding activities and accomplishments throughout the Relay For Life season and are awarded by the American Cancer Society’s judging panel who review entrants from across the globe.

The judging panel noted that Donegal’s ‘Team Spirit’ engaged well with all of its team members through fundraising, survivor and caregiver engagement and knowledge of the Irish Cancer Society’s mission in the fight against cancer. They were also deemed to have an innovative approach to Relay for Life, making a distinct contribution in furthering the mission to eliminate cancer. The team, who were led by Stewart Wright, were selected out of numerous entrants from across the world for their impact on Relay.

Robert O’Connor, Relay For Life Chairperson said: “At Relay for Life Donegal we are thrilled to see Team Spirit receive this award. The group have taken part in our first three relays and their support and commitment has been outstanding. As Chairperson I would like to extend congratulations to Team Spirit from everyone involved in Donegal Relay.”

Matt Lewis, Relay For Life Co-Ordinator at the Irish Cancer Society said: “We would like to congratulate the ‘Team Spirit’ who were led by Team Captain Stewart Wright. They did a fantastic job last year, really engaging with Relay For Life and it’s ethos of celebrating, remembering and fighting back.

The Irish Cancer Society’s mission is to eliminate cancer and Relay For Life is a key vehicle in making that happen. We are all looking forward to the 2015 Relay For Life Donegal which takes place in a number of weeks in Letterkenny and we wish the committee and teams the best of luck.”
